Why is my hognose snake's shed stuck or in pieces?
A western hognose should shed in one complete piece, eye caps included, a shed that comes off in patches or leaves skin stuck behind almost always means humidity was too low during that shed cycle. Raise the moisture briefly, offer a humid hide and a shallow lukewarm soak, and never peel dry skin or pull at the eye caps.
Low humidity is the usual cause
Hognose are dry-climate snakes and do well at modest humidity day to day, but during a shed the skin needs enough moisture to lift and come away cleanly. When the air is too dry the skin dries onto the snake before it can work free and clings in patches, most often on the nose, around the eyes and at the tail tip. A shed that tears mid-way or comes off in flakes is the classic sign the snake was too dry that week.
A humidity bump and a humid hide
As soon as the eyes go cloudy and the skin dulls, nudge humidity up for the shed and add a humid hide, a small covered box with damp moss or paper towel, placed on the warm side so it stays warm and moist. The snake will use it on its own when it needs the extra moisture. This is a brief bump for the shed cycle, not a permanent change; hognose shouldn't be kept constantly damp, as stale wet air risks scale and respiratory problems.
A shallow lukewarm soak
For skin that's already stuck, sit the snake in a shallow dish of lukewarm (not hot) water, just deep enough to cover its belly, for ten to fifteen minutes to soften the retained skin. Then let it work the pieces off itself against décor, or house it overnight in a damp humid hide and check again. Let the softened skin do the coming-off, never rush a stuck shed with force.
Check the nose, tail tip and eye caps
Hognose have an upturned, keeled rostral (nose) scale they use for digging, and shed can catch and build up there, so check the snout carefully every time. Also inspect the tail tip, where rings of retained skin can tighten as they dry and cut off circulation, costing the snake the tail end. The transparent eye caps should come away with the shed; if one looks cloudy or wrinkled, never peel or tweeze it, raise humidity and let the next shed take it.
When to see a vet
See an exotics vet if a soak and humid hide don't clear retained shed, if skin stays stuck on the tail tip and it looks swollen, constricted or discoloured, or if an eye cap is retained over more than one shed, constricted tail tips and retained eye caps need proper attention rather than repeated pulling. If repeated bad sheds suggest a humidity or health problem you can't correct, check with an exotics vet or experienced keeper.
