Quarantine
Keeping a new or rescued animal isolated for a period to catch parasites or illness before it meets your others.
Quarantine means housing a newly acquired animal separately (ideally a different room, with its own tools and strict hand-washing) for several weeks to months, watching for signs of illness and running at least one faecal parasite check.
It is especially important for rescues and wild-caught animals, which commonly carry parasites, and it protects an existing collection from an outbreak. Simple, unfussy housing during quarantine makes it easier to monitor appetite, weight and stool.
