African Fat-tailed Gecko: algunas cosas que conviene saber

The calmer, humidity-loving cousin of the leopard gecko: similar care, but from humid West African habitats rather than dry ones.
It stores fat in that fat tail, a plump tail means good condition, a thin one is a warning.
Nocturnal and ground-dwelling, it spends the day in a humid hide and comes out to hunt at night.
Generally docile and handleable once settled, which makes it a good, underrated beginner gecko.
Like leopard geckos it can drop its tail if grabbed, so handle gently and never by the tail.

De dónde viene african fat-tailed gecko

West Africa

Clima de origen. Warm West African savanna and forest edge; more humid than the leopard gecko's dry range, with warm ground and humid retreats.

Por qué los cuidados son así. This is why baskr targets a 30 to 32°C warm floor, an essential humid hide and 50 to 70% humidity, more moisture than a leopard gecko needs.

Warm floor

A warm ground spot of 30–32°C (86–90°F), with a cool side

A cool floor stops belly-heat digestion and appetite.

Humidity & humid hide

50–70% with an essential moist hide

Too dry, or no humid hide, causes stuck sheds, more so than for a leopard gecko.

Shedding

Clean, complete sheds

Stuck shed on toes and the tail tip needs the moist hide and more humidity.

Tail & weight

A plump tail and steady weight

A thinning tail base is an early red flag.

Feeding & calcium

Gut-loaded insects, calcium-dusted

Refusals warrant checking floor warmth and prey size.

Brumation vs illness

A possible seasonal winter slow-down

baskr separates a normal dip from an off-season decline to act on.

A 90×45×30 cm (3×1.5 ft) floor for an adult, bigger is better. Ground space, warm and cool ends, and a humid hide matter more than height.
Temperaturas
A warm ground spot 30–32°C (86–90°F), a cool side 24–26°C, and a night drop. Nocturnal, so ground warmth matters more than bright basking.
Sustrato
A moisture-holding but firm mix (coir/topsoil, or bioactive), which holds a little humidity without being wet. Avoid loose sand for youngsters (impaction risk).
Escondites y decoración
At least three hides, warm, cool and a humid hide (moist moss or substrate); the humid hide is essential for good sheds.
Distribución
A ground-level setup with a warm end (belly heat), a cool end, and hides on each plus a humid hide. Low and wide, not tall, this is a terrestrial gecko.

Seguras

  • Pothos
  • Sansevieria
  • Hardy low plants

Evitar

  • Pesticide-treated plants
  • Sharp or spiny species
  • Bulb plants (daffodil, tulip)

Planting is optional; a proper humid hide and plenty of cover do more for this ground gecko than plants.

  • All dusted with calcium

Ocasional / premios

  • The odd waxworm (fatty)
  • Silkworms

Nunca dar

  • Oversized prey
  • Wild-caught insects (pesticides)
  • A waxworm-heavy fatty diet

Bueno saberlo. A nocturnal insectivore like a leopard gecko. Keep calcium up and prey sized right.

Ground heat

A heat mat or low overhead heat for a warm ground spot of 30–32°C, always on a thermostat.

Thermostat

Essential with a heat mat, to prevent burns and hold the warm floor.

Humid hide

A moist hide (damp moss/substrate) is essential for clean sheds, more so than for a leopard gecko.

UVB lighting

Optional: a low (~5%) tube can benefit a nocturnal species but isn't essential.

Thermometer + hygrometer

To track the warm floor and humidity.

Low, wide enclosure

A floor-space enclosure rather than a tall one, this is a terrestrial gecko.

Warm ground spot reading 26°C, cool for a fat-tail. Check the heat source, ground warmth drives digestion.

Humidity low and a shed came off in pieces. Refresh the humid hide, fat-tails need more moisture than leopard geckos.

Tail base looks thinner in recent photos. Log weights and check feeding and warmth.

African fat-tailed gecko vs leopard gecko?+

Very similar care, but fat-tails come from humid West Africa, so they need a proper humid hide and a touch more moisture. They're often calmer, too.

Can you handle an African fat-tailed gecko?+

Yes, gently, once settled, they're among the more docile geckos. Never grab or lift by the tail, which they can drop.

Do African fat-tailed geckos need UVB?+

It's optional. They're nocturnal and fine without it, though low-level UVB can benefit them. Ground warmth matters more.

Why is the fat tail important?+

It's a fat store. A plump tail means good condition; a thinning tail base is an early warning sign worth acting on.
