Leopard Tortoise: algunas cosas que conviene saber

Named for the bold dark-on-gold markings of its high-domed shell, one of the most striking tortoises kept.
A big grazer: adults commonly reach 40–50 cm and 15–20+ kg, with giants larger still.
Unlike many tortoises it doesn't really burrow and doesn't hibernate, it's a warm-climate sun-lover.
It can't tolerate cold, damp conditions, they're a leading cause of the respiratory infections this species is prone to.
Long-lived at 50–100 years, so it's a multi-decade commitment that outlives many other pets.

De dónde viene leopard tortoise

Savannas of eastern & southern Africa

Clima de origen. Warm, dry savanna and grassland; sunny days and a marked dislike of cold, damp conditions.

Por qué los cuidados son así. This is why baskr targets a 35 to 40°C basking spot, strong UVB and a dry grazing diet, and flags the cold, damp air that gives leopards respiratory infections.

Lo que baskr vigila para leopard tortoise

El registro es la entrada. El producto es detectar cuándo una sola lectura anómala se convierte en un patrón que hay que atender.

Basking spot

35–40°C (95–104°F)

A cool basking spot undercuts digestion in a large grazer.

Cool side & damp

A cool side of 22–25°C, dry and draught-free

Cold, damp air is the classic trigger for respiratory infection in leopards.

Humidity & pyramiding

40–60%, with a humid hide for youngsters

Too dry while growing pyramids the shell; stagnant damp risks infection.

Growth & weight

Steady and smooth

Rapid, lumpy growth means it's being over-fed or given too much protein.

Diet & fibre

Grass and hay-led, weeds

Fruit and rich foods cause digestive upset and long-term harm.

No hibernation

Warm and active year-round

A cold, sluggish leopard is too cold, not brumating, warm it up.

Cómo montar un terrario para leopard tortoise

Tamaño mínimo
A large open-topped floor: a big tortoise table or room-sized indoor space as a minimum, with a secure outdoor grazing pen for warm, dry days. Adults need metres, not a vivarium.
Temperaturas
Basking 35–40°C (95–104°F), a cool side of 22–25°C, dry and draught-free, with no cold damp. Warm year-round, no hibernation.
Sustrato
A dry, dig-friendly soil and sand base with hay on top, plus a humid hide for youngsters. Keep the main floor dry and draught-free.
Escondites y decoración
A large solid hide and shade; outdoors, a secure shelter it can retreat to. Leopards don't tunnel like sulcatas but still want cover.
Distribución

Humidity and cold have crept up together, leopards are prone to respiratory infection in cold, damp air. Warm and dry the enclosure and watch breathing.

Fruit logged repeatedly, a grazer's gut doesn't handle it well. Return to grass, hay and weeds.
