Greek Tortoise: algunas cosas que conviene saber

One of the classic Mediterranean tortoises, closely related to the Hermann's and kept much the same way.
The name is misleading, its range runs from North Africa across the Middle East, not just Greece, and subspecies vary a lot.
Healthy European-type adults hibernate through winter, a natural, healthy part of their year.
A dry-country weed grazer: it wants weeds and greens, not fruit or rich foods.
Small and hardy at 15–25 cm, and long-lived at 50+ years, a manageable but multi-decade tortoise.

De dónde viene greek tortoise

North Africa, southern Europe & the Middle East

Clima de origen. Mediterranean and dry-country; warm dry summers, cool winters, with European types hibernating.

Por qué los cuidados son así. This is why baskr targets a 32 to 35°C basking spot, strong UVB and a dry weed diet, and helps time a safe hibernation for healthy European-type adults.

Lo que baskr vigila para greek tortoise

El registro es la entrada. El producto es detectar cuándo una sola lectura anómala se convierte en un patrón que hay que atender.

Basking spot

32–35°C (90–95°F)

A cool basking spot undercuts appetite and digestion.

Cool side

20–25°C, in a dry, draught-free setup

Cold, damp conditions risk respiratory infection.

Humidity & pyramiding

40–60%, drier than tropical species, humid hide for youngsters

Too dry while growing pyramids the shell; too damp risks infection.

Weight & pre-hibernation

Steady, and a healthy weight before any hibernation

An underweight or unwell tortoise should not be hibernated, check with an experienced vet.

Diet & fibre

Weeds and greens, high fibre

Fruit and rich foods cause runny droppings and harm.

Hibernation vs illness

A gradual seasonal slow-down in cool months (European types)

baskr separates a normal pre-hibernation dip from off-season illness to act on.

Cómo montar un terrario para greek tortoise

Tamaño mínimo
A 4×2 ft (120×60 cm) open tortoise table minimum for one adult, bigger is better, with secure outdoor time in warm, dry weather.
Temperaturas
Basking 32–35°C (90–95°F), a cool side of 20–25°C, dry and draught-free. Healthy European-type adults hibernate cold (around 4–8°C) in winter.
Sustrato

Escondites y decoración
A solid hide plus shade; outdoors, a secure shelter. They dig a little to thermoregulate and nest.

Preguntas sobre los cuidados de greek tortoise

Do Greek tortoises hibernate?+

Healthy European-type adults do, done in a controlled way and after a vet check. Some North African types don't, so confirm your subspecies. Never hibernate an unwell or underweight tortoise.

What do Greek tortoises eat?+

Edible weeds, leafy greens and grasses, a high-fibre, dry-country diet. Avoid fruit and high-protein foods, which cause digestive upset and shell problems.

Are Greek and Hermann's tortoises the same?+

No, but they're closely related Mediterranean tortoises with very similar care. They differ in shell and scale detail and in exact range, and both are popular, hardy starter tortoises.

How big do Greek tortoises get?+

Small: usually 15–25 cm as adults, so they're manageable, but they can live 50+ years, so it's still a long commitment.
