Chinese Water Dragon : quelques choses à savoir

A slice of rainforest: bright green, highly arboreal and semi-aquatic, it dives into water to escape danger.
Most of its ~90 cm length is an elegant, whip-like tail used for balance and swimming.
It doesn't perceive glass, so it repeatedly rubs or dashes its snout against enclosure walls, causing sore, damaged snouts, a signature welfare issue.
It needs both height to climb and a real water area to soak and swim, so the enclosure design matters a lot.
An omnivore that leans insectivore, with more plant matter as it matures.

D'où vient chinese water dragon

Rainforests of Southeast Asia

Climat d'origine. Warm, humid tropical forest along streams in Thailand, Vietnam and southern China; arboreal and semi-aquatic.

Pourquoi les soins sont ainsi. This is why baskr targets a 32 to 35°C basking spot, 60 to 80% humidity, a tall planted enclosure with a water area, and visual barriers to protect its snout.

Ce que baskr surveille pour chinese water dragon

Le relevé, c'est l'entrée. Le produit, c'est repérer le moment où une seule valeur inhabituelle devient une tendance à traiter.

Basking spot

32–35°C (90–95°F) at a sturdy branch

A cool basking spot undercuts digestion and activity.

Humidity

60–80% with misting or a fogger and a water area

Chronic dryness causes poor sheds, dehydration and respiratory stress in a rainforest species.

Snout condition

A clean, intact snout, no rubbing at the glass

Rostral rubbing leaves the snout raw and infection-prone, add visual barriers and dense planting.

UVB coverage

A good UVB gradient under the foliage, renewed yearly

Weak UVB risks metabolic bone disease in an active, growing basker.

Diet & balance

Insect-led with greens and some fruit, calcium-dusted

An all-insect diet without calcium and plants unbalances a growing dragon.

Weight & condition

Steady and smooth

A downward trend or a thin tail base is an early red flag.

Comment aménager un terrarium pour chinese water dragon

Taille minimale
Tall and planted: a 120×60×120 cm (4×2×4 ft) enclosure as an adult minimum, taller and bigger is better. Height, climbing branches and a water area matter more than floor space.
Températures
Basking 32–35°C (90–95°F), warm ambient days, a cooler shaded zone, a night drop, and 60–80% humidity. Warm, humid and green.
Substrat
A moisture-holding, planted bioactive soil mix (coir/topsoil) that helps hold humidity; heavy planting is part of the design.
Cachettes & déco
Dense foliage and branches for cover and sight breaks, plus a large water area to soak and swim; the planting also reduces snout-rubbing.
Agencement
A tall, densely planted rainforest enclosure: sturdy climbing branches to a basking spot under UVB, high humidity via misting or fog, a large water area, and visual barriers on the glass so it doesn't rub its snout.

Plantes pour un terrarium de chinese water dragon

Sans danger

  • Pothos
  • Ficus
  • Bromeliads
  • Dracaena
  • Hibiscus
  • Sturdy climbing branches and vines

À éviter

  • Pesticide-treated plants
  • Sharp or spiny species
  • Toxic ornamentals

Dense, sturdy planting gives cover, holds humidity, and, crucially, breaks up the glass so the dragon is less likely to injure its snout.

Quoi donner à chinese water dragon, et quoi éviter

Base

  • Insects: crickets, dubia, locusts, gut-loaded and calcium-dusted

Occasionnel / friandises

  • Leafy greens and some vegetables (more with age)
  • A little fruit
  • The odd appropriately-sized whole prey for adults

À ne jamais donner

  • An all-insect diet with no calcium or plants
  • Oversized prey
  • Wild-caught insects

Compléments. Dust insects with calcium (with D3 if UVB is marginal) and a multivitamin about weekly.

Bon à savoir. An omnivore that leans insectivore when young, adding greens and some fruit as it matures. Keep calcium and UVB up for healthy bones.

Le matériel qui compte pour chinese water dragon

Le bon type de matériel, choisis des marques de confiance.

UVB lighting

A 6–10% T5 HO tube (Ferguson zone 2–3) under the foliage over the basking branch, replaced every 12 months.

Basking heat

A basking lamp to reach 32–35°C at a sturdy branch, on a thermostat.

Thermostat

Controls the heat so a planted enclosure can't overheat.

Misting or fogging

Automatic misting or a fogger to hold 60–80% humidity, with airflow so it isn't stagnant.

Large water area

A big, clean water area to soak and swim, changed regularly.

Visual barriers

Plants or a backing on the glass so the dragon doesn't rub its snout raw on invisible walls.

Le genre de chose que baskr te dira

Basé sur tes propres relevés et les valeurs idéales ci-dessus, en langage clair, jamais un diagnostic.

Humidity has averaged 48% this week, low for a water dragon (target 60–80%). Increase misting and check the water area, dryness brings bad sheds and respiratory stress.

Snout-rubbing behaviour logged at the glass. Add dense planting and visual barriers before the snout gets raw and infected.

Diet has been all insects lately. Add calcium-dusting and some greens for a growing, active dragon.

Questions sur l'entretien de chinese water dragon

Why is my water dragon rubbing its nose on the glass?+

Water dragons don't see glass, so they try to move through it and rub or bash their snouts, leaving them raw and infection-prone. Break up the glass with dense planting and visual barriers, give plenty of height and cover, and make sure the enclosure is big enough.

Do Chinese water dragons need water?+

Yes. They're semi-aquatic and use a large water area to soak, swim and escape stress. Combine that with high humidity (60–80%) via misting or a fogger, they're a rainforest species.

What do Chinese water dragons eat?+

They're omnivores that lean insectivore: mostly gut-loaded insects when young, adding greens and some fruit with age. Keep calcium and UVB up to protect their bones.

How big do Chinese water dragons get?+

Around 90 cm (3 ft) total, though most of that is tail. They need a tall, planted enclosure with height, branches and a water area rather than just floor space.
