Arboreal chameleon · Madagascar

Know whether your panther chameleon's care is actually on track.

Your panther chameleon can't tell you it's dehydrating or that the basking branch has drifted cool. baskr watches the pattern across your logs, temperature, humidity, weight and feeding, and shows you what needs attention before it becomes a problem.

Panther Chameleon: algunas cosas que conviene saber

One of the most spectacular reptiles kept: males blaze in colour 'locales' named after regions of Madagascar (Ambilobe, Nosy Be, Ambanja).
Colour signals mood and health, not camouflage, a dark, dull panther is often cold or stressed.
It drinks only moving water, droplets from misting or a dripper, never from a still bowl.
Chameleons are solitary and territorial, so it's a strict one-per-enclosure, look-don't-handle animal.
It needs airflow, so a screen or hybrid enclosure, not a sealed glass tank, is the norm.

De dónde viene panther chameleon

Northern & coastal Madagascar

Clima de origen. Warm, humid coastal forest and edges of northern Madagascar; warm days, cooler humid nights, frequent rain.

Por qué los cuidados son así. This is why baskr targets a 29 to 32°C basking branch, strong UVB, drinking droplets from misting, and a dry-day, humid-night pattern, not a sealed, static box.

Lo que baskr vigila para panther chameleon

El registro es la entrada. El producto es detectar cuándo una sola lectura anómala se convierte en un patrón que hay que atender.

Basking spot

29–32°C (85–90°F) at the top branch

Too cool undercuts digestion; too hot risks burns and dehydration.

Humidity & hydration

50–60% by day, higher at night, with misting or a dripper

Too dry causes dehydration and kidney stress, watch for sunken eyes and dark orange urates.

UVB coverage

6% (stronger by distance) over the basking branch, filtered through foliage, renewed on schedule

Weak UVB is a fast route to metabolic bone disease.

Feeding & gutload

Varied gut-loaded insects, dusted with calcium

An unvaried or poorly-supplemented diet causes deficiencies.

Drinking behaviour

Regular drinking at misting or a dripper

Not drinking, or dark urates, points to dehydration, a common chameleon problem.

Airflow & stress

Good ventilation and visual privacy

Stagnant air or seeing other chameleons stresses them and invites respiratory issues.

Cómo montar un terrario para panther chameleon

Tamaño mínimo
A tall, planted screen or hybrid enclosure, 60×60×120 cm (2×2×4 ft) as an adult minimum, taller and bigger is better. Vertical space, branches and airflow matter more than floor area.
Temperaturas
Basking 29–32°C (85–90°F) at the top, ambient 24–27°C, a cooler shaded base, and a night drop to around 21–24°C. Never let it overheat, and give it shade to retreat into.
Sustrato
Often bare or a simple drained bioactive base; the design work is vertical, dense branches and foliage, not the floor. Manage misting run-off so it can't pool.
Escondites y decoración
Dense planting and a network of branches at different heights give cover, basking and shade options; a chameleon needs to break line of sight and choose its temperature.
Distribución
Vertical and green: a basking branch near the top under UVB, a cooler shaded lower zone, heavy planting for cover and humidity, and strong airflow. Add a dripper or automatic misting for drinking.

Plantas para un terrario de panther chameleon

Seguras

  • Ficus
  • Pothos
  • Schefflera
  • Hibiscus
  • Dracaena

Evitar

  • Pesticide-treated plants
  • Sharp or spiny species
  • Toxic ornamentals

Heavy live planting holds humidity, gives cover, and supports the drinking droplets a chameleon relies on.

Qué dar de comer a panther chameleon, y qué evitar

Base

  • Varied gut-loaded insects: crickets, dubia, locusts, silkworms, hornworms
  • All dusted with calcium

Ocasional / premios

  • Waxworms (sparingly, fatty)
  • Butterworms

Nunca dar

  • Oversized prey
  • Wild-caught insects (pesticides)
  • An unvaried diet

Suplementos. Calcium at most feeds (with D3 lightly, per your UVB) and a multivitamin occasionally.

Bueno saberlo. An insectivore that drinks droplets, not from a bowl. Variety, gut-loading and calcium are everything.

El equipo que importa para panther chameleon

El tipo de equipo adecuado, elige marcas de confianza.

UVB lighting

A 6% T5 HO tube (stronger by mounting distance, Ferguson zone 3) over the basking branch, filtered through foliage, replaced every 12 months.

Basking heat

A basking bulb to reach 29–32°C at the top branch, on a thermostat.

Misting or dripper

Essential for drinking: an automatic mister or dripper, since panthers won't use a still bowl.

Thermostat

Controls the basking heat safely.

Thermometer + hygrometer

To track the basking spot and the day/night humidity swing.

Screen / hybrid enclosure

A tall, ventilated screen or hybrid enclosure for the airflow chameleons need.

El tipo de cosa que baskr te dirá

Basado en tus propios registros y los rangos ideales de arriba, en lenguaje claro, nunca un diagnóstico.

Humidity has run low and no drinking logged, watch for sunken eyes. Increase misting or add a dripper, dehydration is a top chameleon problem.

Basking spot hit 35°C midday, hot for a panther. Ease the bulb and make sure it has shade to retreat into.

UVB tube is past its replacement date. Renew it, chameleons develop MBD fast on weak UVB.

Preguntas sobre los cuidados de panther chameleon

Can you handle a panther chameleon?+

Not really. They're solitary, easily stressed display animals, and frequent handling stresses them. Enjoy watching rather than holding.

Can panther chameleons live together?+

No. Chameleons are territorial and must be housed alone, even seeing another chameleon is a chronic stressor.

How do panther chameleons drink?+

From moving water only, misting droplets or a dripper, not a still bowl. Dehydration (dark urates, sunken eyes) is common, so make drinking easy.

Glass or screen enclosure?+

Screen or hybrid, for airflow; sealed glass can go stagnant. Balance ventilation with holding humidity through heavy planting and misting.
