Giant arboreal lizard · Central & South America

Know whether your green iguana's care is actually on track.

Your iguana can't tell you the UVB has faded or that too much protein is straining its kidneys. baskr watches the pattern across your logs, temperature, humidity, weight and feeding, and shows you what needs attention before it becomes a problem.

Green Iguana: algunas cosas que conviene saber

That cute hatchling becomes a 1.5–2 m (5–6 ft) lizard, most green iguanas are rehomed or given up because owners underestimate the size.
It's a strict herbivore: adults need leafy greens, and animal protein actively harms their kidneys.
Highly arboreal, it wants height and sturdy branches, an adult ultimately needs a custom, room-sized enclosure.
Breeding-season males can become genuinely aggressive, which catches many keepers out.
With correct care they live 15–20 years, so this is a large, long, demanding commitment, not a starter lizard.

De dónde viene green iguana

Rainforests of Central & South America

Clima de origen. Warm, humid tropical rainforest and riverbanks; hot, bright and humid, high in the canopy.

Por qué los cuidados son así. This is why baskr targets a 35 to 40°C basking spot, strong wide UVB, 70%+ humidity, a strictly herbivore diet and a huge arboreal enclosure.

Lo que baskr vigila para green iguana

El registro es la entrada. El producto es detectar cuándo una sola lectura anómala se convierte en un patrón que hay que atender.

Basking spot

35–40°C (95–104°F) at a sturdy basking branch

A cool basking spot undercuts digestion in a large herbivore.

UVB coverage

Strong, wide UVB across the basking zone, renewed yearly

Weak or faded UVB is the fast track to metabolic bone disease in a fast-growing lizard.

Humidity

70%+ for a rainforest species

Chronic dryness causes poor sheds and dehydration; support kidney health with good hydration.

Diet (herbivore)

Leafy greens and vegetables, calcium-dusted, no animal protein

Protein (insects, dog food, meat) damages iguana kidneys, keep it strictly plant-based.

Growth & weight

Steady, smooth growth

Poor growth or a thin tail base points to husbandry or UVB problems.

Space & stress

Room to climb, with height and branches

A cramped, too-small enclosure stresses an iguana and can drive aggression.

Cómo montar un terrario para green iguana

Tamaño mínimo
Huge. Hatchlings start smaller, but an adult needs a custom, room-sized arboreal enclosure, think a converted closet or a purpose-built cage measured in metres, with tall, sturdy climbing branches. No standard vivarium is enough.
Temperaturas
Basking 35–40°C (95–104°F), warm ambient days, a cooler zone, and 70%+ humidity. A rainforest lizard: warm, humid and brightly lit.
Sustrato
A simple, cleanable base (newspaper, tile, or a soil mix); the real design work is vertical climbing space, not the floor.
Escondites y decoración
Sturdy, wide basking branches and platforms at height, plus visual cover; an iguana wants to sit up high and survey.
Distribución
Tall and green: strong horizontal basking branches near the heat and UVB, climbing structure throughout, high humidity, and a large water area to soak. Everything must bear a heavy adult's weight.

Plantas para un terrario de green iguana

Seguras

  • Collard, mustard and turnip greens
  • Dandelion and other edible weeds
  • Hibiscus (leaves and flowers)
  • Squash and other iguana-safe vegetables

Evitar

  • Any animal protein
  • Spinach and high-oxalate greens in excess
  • Iceberg lettuce (empty)
  • Pesticide-treated plants

Think salad garden, not feeder insects: a varied, calcium-rich plant diet is the whole basis of iguana health.

Qué dar de comer a green iguana, y qué evitar

Base

  • Leafy greens (collard, mustard, turnip, dandelion)
  • A variety of iguana-safe vegetables
  • Calcium-dusted at most feeds

Ocasional / premios

  • A little fruit
  • Hibiscus flowers

Nunca dar

  • Animal protein of any kind (harms the kidneys)
  • Dog or cat food
  • An all-lettuce or all-fruit diet

Suplementos. Calcium (with D3 if UVB is marginal) at most feeds, plus a multivitamin occasionally, bone health is a constant priority.

Bueno saberlo. A strict herbivore. The single most important rule: greens and vegetables, never animal protein, which damages iguana kidneys.

El equipo que importa para green iguana

El tipo de equipo adecuado, elige marcas de confianza.

UVB lighting

Strong, wide 10–12% T5 HO coverage (Ferguson zone 3–4) over the basking zone, replaced every 12 months.

Basking heat

A basking setup to reach 35–40°C at a sturdy branch, on a thermostat.

Thermostat

Controls the heat safely across a large enclosure.

Thermometer + hygrometer

To hold the hot basking spot and 70%+ humidity.

Custom enclosure

The defining cost: a room-sized, tall, custom-built arboreal enclosure for the adult.

Large water / soak area

A big water area to soak, supporting hydration and healthy sheds.

El tipo de cosa que baskr te dirá

Basado en tus propios registros y los rangos ideales de arriba, en lenguaje claro, nunca un diagnóstico.

UVB tube is over 12 months old and growth has slowed. Replace it, faded UVB is the classic cause of metabolic bone disease in iguanas.

Animal protein logged this week. Iguanas are strict herbivores, protein strains their kidneys, keep the diet fully plant-based.

Basking spot averaged 31°C, below the 35–40°C this large herbivore needs to digest. Check the lamp and branch height.

Preguntas sobre los cuidados de green iguana

How big do green iguanas get?+

Very big: 1.5–2 m (5–6 ft) including the tail, and heavy-bodied. They need a custom, room-sized enclosure as adults, which is why so many are rehomed. Be sure you can house a full-grown one for 15–20 years.

What do green iguanas eat?+

They're strict herbivores: leafy greens and vegetables, calcium-dusted. Never feed animal protein (insects, meat, dog food), it damages their kidneys. This is the most important iguana rule.

Are green iguanas good beginner pets?+

No. Between the eventual size, the strict diet, the strong UVB and humidity needs, and breeding-season aggression in males, they're a demanding, advanced, long-term commitment.

Do green iguanas need UVB?+

Yes, strong, wide UVB is essential. They're fast-growing basking herbivores, and without good UVB (and calcium) they quickly develop metabolic bone disease.
