Fire Salamander: ein paar wissenswerte Dinge

That vivid black-and-yellow pattern is a warning: fire salamanders secrete toxins from skin glands, so they're beautiful but not for casual handling.
The name comes from old European folklore of salamanders crawling out of burning logs, they hide inside damp wood, so a fire would drive them out.
Cool-climate amphibians from shaded European hill forests, they can't tolerate much warmth, no heat lamp, ever.
Long-lived and hardy in the right conditions, many reach 10–20 years and some captives far longer.
Most active at night and after rain, so humidity and misting, not bright light, are what bring them out.

Woher Fire Salamander stammen

Hill forests of central & southern Europe

Wildes Klima. Cool, shaded, humid European hill and mountain woodland; active at night and after rain, never hot.

Warum die Pflege so ist, wie sie ist. This is why baskr keeps it cool at 15 to 20°C with no heating, 70 to 80% humidity and a planted, hidden woodland floor, it shows stress when it's too warm.

Worauf baskr bei deiner Fire Salamander achtet

Das Eintragen ist der Input. Der eigentliche Nutzen ist zu erkennen, wann aus einem einzelnen Ausreißer ein Muster wird, das Handlung erfordert.

Temperature (keep it cool)

15–20°C (60–68°F), stressed above ~22°C

Heat is the primary danger, this cool-climate species shows stress quickly when it's too warm.

Humidity & moisture

70–80% with a damp substrate, plentiful cover and good ventilation

Too dry dehydrates its skin; stagnant, waterlogged damp invites skin and fungal infection.

Weight & condition

A full but not bloated body

A downward trend or a thinning tail-base warrants checking temperature, feeding and hydration.

Feeding

Earthworm-led, 2–3 measured feeds a week for adults

Off food usually points to it being too warm or too dry, check the environment first.

Water & skin

Dechlorinated water only, a shallow dish and clean mistings

Chlorinated or dirty water damages the skin it breathes through.

Seasonal rhythm

A natural cool-season slow-down is normal

baskr tells a normal winter dip apart from an off-season decline to act on.

So richtest du ein Fire Salamander-Terrarium ein

Mindestgröße
A 60×45 cm (24×18 in, ~60 litre) planted woodland floor for one adult, larger for a pair or group. Floor space and cover matter far more than height.
Temperaturen
15–20°C (60–68°F); it shows stress above ~22°C, so keeping it cool is the whole game. It needs no heating, if your home is warm, a cool room or basement, fans or summer cooling is the priority.
Bodengrund
A deep, moisture-holding mix of coconut fibre and soil topped with leaf litter and moss, damp but never waterlogged.
Verstecke & Deko
Plenty of cover, cork bark, half-logs, rock caves and leaf litter, this is a secretive, nocturnal woodland animal that hides by day.
Aufbau
A cool, humid, planted woodland terrarium: damp substrate and leaf litter, dense cork and plant cover, a shallow dechlorinated water dish, good ventilation, and no heat or basking lamp. Glass helps shed heat and hold humidity.

Pflanzen für ein Fire Salamander-Terrarium

Sicher geeignet

  • Pothos
  • Ferns
  • Moss
  • Hardy shade woodland plants (in pots)

Meiden

  • Pesticide-treated plants
  • Sharp or spiny species
  • Anything wanting hot, bright light

A planted, leaf-littered, bioactive-style setup suits them well, it holds humidity and gives this shy species the cover it needs.

Was du einer Fire Salamander fütterst, und was nicht

Grundnahrung

  • Earthworms and nightcrawlers (the staple)
  • Gut-loaded crickets

Gelegentlich / Leckerbissen

  • Waxworms (sparingly, fatty)
  • Slugs and the odd soft-bodied insect

Niemals füttern

  • Oversized prey
  • Wild-caught insects (pesticides/parasites)
  • A fatty waxworm-led diet

Nahrungsergänzung. Lightly dust food with calcium and an occasional multivitamin; keep it modest.

Gut zu wissen. A woodland carnivore, feed 2–3 measured meals a week to adults. Handle as little as possible, their skin secretions are toxic and their skin absorbs whatever is on your hands, use clean wet hands only if you must move one.

Die Ausstattung, auf die es bei einer Fire Salamander ankommt

Die richtige Art von Ausstattung, wähle Marken, denen du vertraust.

Cooling, not heating

No heat or basking lamp; the priority is keeping the terrarium cool, a cool room, fans or summer cooling beats any bulb.

Thermometer + hygrometer

Digital, to prove it's staying in the cool 15–20°C band and 70–80% humidity.

Misting

Regular dechlorinated mistings for humidity, with ventilation so it doesn't turn stagnant.

Water conditioner

Dechlorinator so mistings and the water dish are safe for amphibian skin.

Deep, damp substrate

A moisture-holding coco and soil mix with leaf litter for cover and humidity.

Enclosure

A low, secure glass terrarium with a good lid and cross-ventilation; they escape through small gaps.

Solche Hinweise gibt dir baskr

Verankert in deinen eigenen Einträgen und den Idealwerten oben, verständliche Sprache, niemals eine Diagnose.

Temperature has averaged 23°C this week, above the comfortable ceiling for a fire salamander. Cool the room, sustained warmth stresses this species.

Humidity has slipped to 55%. Mist with dechlorinated water and check the substrate is damp to protect its skin.

No feeding logged in 6 days. Check temperature and humidity first, then offer an earthworm.

Pflege-Fragen zur Fire Salamander

What temperature do fire salamanders need?+

Cool: about 15–20°C (60–68°F), and they show stress above roughly 22°C. They use no heat lamp. In a warm home the task is to cool the enclosure (a cool room or basement, fans, summer cooling), never to heat it.

Are fire salamanders poisonous?+

They secrete toxins from skin glands as a defence, which is what the bold black-and-yellow advertises. It's not dangerous to admire them, but wash your hands, keep them away from your eyes and mouth, and handle as little as possible.

What do fire salamanders eat?+

Mainly earthworms and nightcrawlers, plus gut-loaded crickets and occasional slugs or waxworms. Feed adults a couple of measured meals a week.

How long do fire salamanders live?+

A long time, commonly 10–20 years with good care, and some live far longer, so they're a genuine long-term commitment.
